Teeth whitening is the biggest craze on social media, such as seen on Instagram and Facebook.
There are many variations in the market for teeth whitening products, including the do-it-yourself- kits available online, whitening kits over the counter at pharmacies, and non-dentist services such as the smile booths in shopping centres.
Many of our whitening consumers are young adults who may not know the risks of using or misusing whitening products on their teeth. Every person’s enamel varies in its thickness and quality. When patients attend dental consultations, the dentist assesses multiple factors that deem a patient a good or a wrong candidate for teeth whitening.
Patients must understand that not every procedure is applicable successfully to their teeth. Some individuals have thicker and stronger enamel than others, which means that their enamel will be more responsive to the whitening gels. Compared to patients who may have a lesser than ideal enamel quality, for example, due to wear or erosion of their enamel, these patients may experience more sensitivity. Some patients may have a loss of mineral in their enamel as a result of a congenital disorder where the enamel appears more mottled or spotted. In these cases, teeth whitening is not going to resolve the issue of the appearance of the enamel.
Some severe side effects of inappropriate use of whitening gels can be prolonged sensitivity or unresolved sensitivity in severer cases, burnt gums, inconsistent results, overheating the nerve of the tooth/ teeth, and possible weakening of already worn enamel.
You need to have a consultation with your dentist regarding the whitening of your teeth to rate a successful outcome through whitening.
The dentist will assess the quality of your enamel, evaluate your existing shade, carefully anticipate your result, and recommend the appropriate mode of whitening and strength of a gel. It is a tailor-made procedure, and every single person has a different prescription for their whitening journey.
There are two main options, including take-home kits and in-chair whitening systems.
The take-home kit consists of custom made moulds of your teeth and a specially selected concentrated whitening kit for your tailored needs. The dentist also arranges a follow-up appointment to take your post-whitening shade and ensure the results have been met successfully.
The In-chair whitening system our surgery uses is called “Zoom” by Phillips. It is one of the most highly recognized in-chair whitening systems utilized across many dental surgeries across the world.
