Having regular examination and clean appointments from an early age helps children to build confidence and trust with the dentist, maintain good oral health habits, and positively influence future visits for them as adults.
Many parents wonder when their child should start coming to see the dentist. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends that parents arrange an appointment for their child from the time their first tooth appears or when they are 12 months of age (whichever happens to occur first.) At this appointment, your dentist will be able to give you some advice on brushing, teething, diet, and habits such as thumb sucking and grinding.
Having regular examination and clean appointments from an early age helps children to build confidence and trust with the dentist, maintain good oral health habits, and positively influence future visits for them as adults. It also allows your child’s dentist to monitor their teeth and jaw development more accurately and detect any potential problems that may require minimally invasive treatment.
Your child’s first dental appointment will be a completely new experience for them, so don’t worry if they aren’t keen on participating. Our team understands that coming to the dentist for the first time can be overwhelming and will do everything they can to make your little one comfortable.
A common misconception is that baby teeth, also known as milk teeth, aren’t as important as permanent teeth. Eventually, baby teeth will fall out to make way for your child’s permanent (adult) teeth, but keeping them clean and maintaining good oral health habits is still imperative. Baby teeth that are prematurely removed due to decay can lead to crowding when their adult teeth emerge. Brushing twice a day (with a pea-sized amount of low-fluoride toothpaste if they are under 3 years) with a soft-bristled brush for two minutes is an important habit to instill. Some patients have found that using an egg timer has helped make this more fun for their child!
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a government initiative that provides eligible children between the ages of 2-17 years with up to $1000.00 every 2 calendar years to pay for a range of dental services.
If your child is eligible, the scheme will typically cover the following services:
NOTE: Unfortunately, treatments such as orthodontics, tooth replacement options, and any dental work carried out in a hospital is not covered by the scheme.
