Dentures are an effective solution to replace missing teeth and surrounding areas. Dentures are tailored to match your existing teeth’s colour, shape, and aesthetic; this helps to make them appear as natural as possible.
Dentures are typically viewed as durable dental appliances that will last for many years. During this time, however, they may require some maintenance and adjustments to ensure their longevity and that the fit is correct for your bite and surrounding teeth.
There are two primary types of dentures. These are:
are used to replace one or more missing teeth. This helps not only aesthetically, but also to prevent the adjacent teeth from moving. They are typically made using three different materials. A cast metal base with clasps that hold the pink plastic (used to replicate gum tissue) and the replacement tooth or teeth.
Complete Dentures cover or replace an entire row of teeth. The process can typically take anywhere from four to eight weeks from start to finish depending on your individual needs.
One of the questions that we are most frequently asked is what the difference between a conventional and an immediate denture is.
Other types include:
Conventional Dentures are made once the required teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has had several weeks to heal. This method helps to ensure a more comfortable and precise fit for you, and it may reduce the number of adjustment appointments required.
Immediate Dentures are typically made within 24-48 hours after the removal of the required teeth. This option is often quite appealing for patients. However, immediate dentures usually require more adjustment appointments to ensure they fit correctly once the gum has had sufficient time to heal. This is due to the shape of your gums and soft tissue changing shape from the healing process, which can lead to ill-fitting dentures or discomfort.
Whichever type of denture you require, you can expect to have several visits with us to make sure that your dentures fit well and to ensure their longevity.
It can take anywhere between 3-6 months for the soft tissue to fully heal after an extraction. More often than not, dentures are issued before this time. This may mean that your dentures will need some adjustments made, so they fit correctly. They may also need to be relined after a few months to compensate for the soft tissue changes that occur during the healing process.
