Mouthguards are a dental appliance that covers your gums and teeth, which helps to minimise and ward off injury.
Mouthguards are a dental appliance that covers your gums and teeth, which helps to minimise and ward off injury. More often than not, they are used for people who are involved in contact sports or who participate in other activities with a high risk of impact to the face where they help protect from trauma and bruising
All of our dentists offer tailor-made mouthguards, which provides you with the optimum level of comfort and protection. Whilst there are over-the-counter options available, these are only appropriate as a temporary solution.
To tailor these devices to your individualized needs and bite our dentists take an impression of your teeth. Using high-grade material, the mouthguard is then moulded over the model of your teeth. We offer a range of thicknesses to suit various sporting activities and the level of protection required.
Tailored-made or custom-fitted mouthguards are superior to over-the-counter options because they are individually designed to fit the exact form of your mouth. They are also resilient, allow for normal speech and breathing and stay in place, which will enable you to focus on the activities that you are doing.
These types of mouthguards aren’t recommended by the Australian Dental Association (ADA). The reason for this is that they do not adequately protect the teeth, they are ill-fitting, and they hamper normal speech and breathing. Because they are ill-fitting, you can run the risk of them becoming dislodged upon impact, which can lead to them becoming lodged in the throat.
High contact sports such as hockey, soccer, and rugby all contribute to the majority of dental injuries. When there is an impact on the lower part of your face, the force can travel through the jaw, teeth, and even to the upper part of your skull. Mouthguards act as a buffer for these kinds of impacts and not only provide protection to your teeth and gums; but can also help to prevent neck and jaw injuries, reduce concussion and protect the jaw against injuries of the surrounding soft tissues. This is because the spongy material helps absorb the shock and lessen the force that is delivered to these areas.
To help maintain the longevity of your mouthguard, you will need to keep it out of direct sunlight, wash it in cold water before and after use, and take it with you to your regular examination and clean appointments with your dentist. During this appointment, your dentist will check that the mouthguard is still in working order and that it fits properly
