About Root Canal Therapy

In the past, teeth were removed if the nerve was infected. Today, teeth can be saved through “Endodontics,” or more commonly known as Root Canal Therapy.

When the nerve of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected, the tooth requires a different form of treatment.

The most common cause of nerve inflammation or infection is the result of a cracked or chipped tooth, deep cavity or filling, or other serious injuries to the tooth. These can all allow bacteria to enter the nerve and can cause pain.
 

When do i need a root canal?

Sometimes there is no pain associated, and some patients delay treatment. However, bacteria can still damage the bone that holds the tooth in the jaw. Without immediate treatment, other issues can arise, such as facial swelling or the tooth may have to be removed, leaving a missing space between teeth.
 

Whats is the procedure?

Root canal therapy involves a few dental visits, and the dentist will perform the necessary steps to save your tooth.

• The tooth’s’ nerve is removed from the root of the tooth (the space inside the tooth)
• The space is then cleaned thoroughly and shaped with strong antibacterial medication
• The space is then filled with gutta-percha, which is biocompatible with the tooth. This marks the completion of root canal therapy.

However, any tooth undergoing root canal therapy typically requires a full-coverage restoration, usually in the form of a full-coverage crown.
This way, the tooth will last for many years after treatment and prevents the risk of future fracturing or decay.
 

What to expect after?

After Root Canal Therapy, teeth become fragile and require the support of a crown in order to become a functional tooth for everyday use again.
